I became a television scriptwriter in 1985, when I contributed to the first series of the BBC’s hospital drama, Casualty. A hundred and thirty odd broadcast scripts later I finally got round to fulfilling my ambition to write and publish a novel. But my other ambition as a writer has always been to bring lesbian characters into the mainstream. In the early years of my career I sat through too many frustrating script meetings listening to excuses for excluding LBGT characters from mainstream television. Fortunately times have changed.
